Notte Verde - Casa delle Agriculture

August 2021
#CasadelleAgriculture
“Craftspeople from across the Confederacy of Villages were sent to Notte Verde in August of 2021, strengthening the bonds between rural villages.”

Notte Verde, or the Green Night, is an agricultural festival that has been held in Castiglione d’Otranto from the 28th to the 31st of August every year since 2013. Though Castiglione d’Otranto only has a population of 1.000, every year 30.000 guests arrive in the village for four days of talks, workshops, performances and markets to celebrate the beauty of rural ecology. Each event held during Notte Verde relates to one of the Confederation of Villages’ core topics, ranging from conversations about art and culture to exhibitions explaining climate change and soil health.

In the years since it began, Notte Verde has become a symbol of Casa delle Agriculture’s activities and goals. The main topics of every festival reflect the organisation’s specific goals for the following year. In August of 2021, Notte Verde hosted craftspeople from every organisation in the Confederacy of Villages. Through a series of round tables, presentations and showcases, locals and the invited craftspeople shared their experiences and practices, expanding conceptions of the rural from both outsider and insider perspectives. The message of unity conveyed by the delegates of the Confederacy set the tone not only for Casa delle Agriculture’s agenda, but also for the agendas of each organisation in attendance. Our projects the following Notte Verde were about the collective in the rural, an exploration of commons and what it means to be a rural community.

Notte Verde was an occasion to inform audiences and organisations alike about the progress of our project, receiving feedback and discussing further steps. It also facilitated contact between creative professionals and furthered the building of a solid network of crafts artists across rural villages. It is our hope that the spirit of Notte Verde lives on in every action we take, promoting rural unity and artistic expression. As we pursue our goals in the future, we will remember the lessons learned at Notte Verde and celebrate the beauty of community.
