In 2021, the KF Film Academy organised several one-week film workshops in CoV villages, engaging with local youth and children in an effort to explore rural cinematography. KF Huset introduced students in different villages to the Academy’s methodology and fostered new perspectives that helped develop their vision. Participants engaged in community-based activities and acquired practical skills, learning filmmaking basics and using cameras to explore rural practices related to ecological awareness and rural practices. They were encouraged to meet and portray various village groups, including youths, farmers, immigrants, artists, and filmmakers.
During one of the field trips, students from the Swedish Film Academy joined KF Huset´s workshops with the goal of broadening their understanding of rural landscapes and strengthening their practical skills. They learned about environmental challenges, local self-organisation and European contexts in addition to expanding their ideas of identity, territory and periphery. CoV partner villages provided the students with accommodations and workshop spaces. In addition to this, village locals worked with the students they hosted to develop their pedagogical skills by planning and executing some of the workshops together. The field trips were documented in film, and the resulting productions were shared online.
These initiatives developed an international perception of the periphery, encouraged collaborations, established a European network and empowered rural youth to embrace their identities. The project culminated with a presentation of the student-produced film projects at the Umeå European Film Festival in November 2021.
